sepehr g.  asks

What books by Toni Packer do you recommend, and is Kusan Sunim's The Way of Korean Zen good?

my  reply

“ the work of this moment ”  by toni packer i found very useful and i liked  “ the way of korean zen ”   (translated by martine batchelor)

hmm, I see  you  have had a holiday,  holbox  island no less : o)

you have experienced too much freedom, have fun being ripped apart by what is a phony Japanese nationalist construct :o)

you,  your wife  and  the san francisco zen center  are on a collision course and who is going to come off worse?

kogen  replies !

30 blows if you do. 30 blows if you don't. Who holds the kyosakyu?

my  reply !

you are a writer and have spent time as a hermit in Alaska ! surely you know the difference between some trite zen cliché and the real contact of infinities originality ! shame on you ! :o(

I think the diet at green gulch is fucking your brain, vegetarian diets in the monastic setting have their origins in the need to reduce the sex drive of monks and are not suitable for married couples, being low in  zinc  for a start !

also organic farms that use kelp as a fertiliser can end up with arsenic in the soil !

it occurred to me that both you and your wife have a drinking problem and the attraction of green gulch is it doesn't permit alcohol.................

people who need to drink like that can need chromium.............. they are self medicating anyway, the diet at green gulch with sorta salad and wheat flour approach is going to be contrary to your real nutritional  needs

the Philips broadband uvb lamps we  use  have hardly any uva comparatively, one of the reasons I chose them : o)

I think these lamps are basically hormetic  (possibly including hormesis for melanoma !)  except for being potentially inductive of keratosis and basal and squamous cell carcinomas on already sun damaged skin

“ Mechanism by which UVA contributes to  photoaging  of skin ”

uvb irridating  mushrooms  with a xenon strobe

usual,  patent  the air, but informative !

I don't think their vitamin D generation rates are any higher than my Philips broadband UVB lamp, they are doing it the expensive way, but maybe suitable for mass production ?

patenting the air goes like this :

if you think a claim for generating vitamin D in mushrooms with a xenon strobe is an outrageous abuse of the patent process try this !

since air transmits uv and sunlight has uv and mushrooms in sunlight make some degree of vitamin D, then we claim any use of air  (inside and outside)  to transmit uv  (includes all uv, visible and infra red sprectra !)  as our patent ! : o)

is you learn

to wake up again as the head drops/nods off which is very useful for driving when you are tired

when i lived in auckland  (ed. new zealand!)  and drove out to the west coast beaches i was always nodding off at the wheel when coming back in the dark and it was very dangerous but my weekly zen sitting with the auckland zen society at the leys institute had made me very aware of this nodding off and snapping back so it think that may have helped reduce the possibility of falling asleep at the wheel for any longer than a second !

(years before as a teenager i had abad accident possibly nodding off at the wheel and there may have been alcohol in a punch at dance i had just been to and i certainly wasn't used to it !)

now if i think there's any danger off nodding of like that i just pull over, tip the seat back and snooze for a while ! :o()

oddly dogen is a complete paradigm for zen, not just because he was good at writing volumes of meaningless nonsense that you can pretend means something useful, but his health was a disaster and you can see several instances in his life where he completely missed the boat health wise  (sundried mushrooms contain vitamin D !)  and i am sure that zazen contributed to his early demise  (from TB !)

but you do yourself a disservice by not taking a more balanced view of vaccination, when you know people and children who have been unequivocally damaged by vaccines one's views change !

vaccines are complex in effect and potentially extremely beneficial in most, but not all cases, hardly a radical viewpoint is it, but you article comes across as naive ! : o(

did you notice the problem with the recent vaccine given to children having to be withdrawn because of adverse reactions ?

the AMA had to publically  criticize  doctors who continued to use that vaccine !

the usa has a compensation system for vaccine damage and currently pays hundreds of millions of dollars a year out for it, very quietly tho and always with the condition of no publicity !

the newspapers are failing, not simply because of competition with the internet, but the very poor quality of writing and investigation that unfortunately your article is typical of !

it's a complex world and modern medicine with its advantages and disadvantages needs paring for the best and even adequate results and avoiding big potholes, our sliced bread mentality, so unfortunately amplified by journalists the wrong way, needs remedying : o()

what you call zen is a political artifact of the extreme and violent nationalism that was starting to engulf japan in the meiji era and of course terminated in the disasters of WW2 and Hiroshima

nishijima was an officer in the imperial japanese army for gods sake !

i think you would find it productive to look at the blend of depression and egoism you are, as it stands it leaves you vulnerable, you don't have enough feeling or won't allow yourself to feel and see the absolute aspect of life enough which just bleeds everywhere, you have pickedup the cardboard cereal approach of zen and use that to blank out your own observations and and feeling and seeing.............

what can i say ?............................

i'm not really saying celibacy is an answer either, but it does give the freedom for more untalented mortals like ourselves to nut things out properly, brad warner is a beautiful example of some-one who got too distracted and look at the result, a warning if there ever was one, poor fellow, dead broke, early dementia and hooked onto his one glimpse of infinity : o()

you have to face you are only ever going to have a limited understanding and could you accept this, which observation must surely tell you, then that is sufficient for it contains the true wellspring of enlightenment which is humility and that will breathe it's welcome freshness into all you do : o ) (

That abbreviated history of the world in several insults is fascinating in its own way, Andrew, but I'm afraid the urge that you give into (automaton-like) to insult with violent (including sexually violent) language devalues for the reader any valid point you *may* have.

This is quite interesting:

"i think you would find it productive to look at the   of depression and egoism you are, as it stands it leaves you vulnerable, you don't have enough feeling or won't allow yourself to feel and see the absolute aspect of life enough which just bleeds everywhere, you have pickedup the cardboard cereal approach of zen and use that to blank out your own observations and and feeling and seeing............."

...But, since you are really talking about yourself here, it would be most interesting and useful if you could actually apply this to yourself rather than give into the safer and rather predictable (at this stage) thing of projecting your self/other loathing at others.

As usual, you miss, and/or avoid, the point where it is all happening and create, as Kubrick had it in Full Metal Jacket, a 'world of shit'.

Be braver than this. John Moriarty, Dylan Thomas, and certainly James Joyce were braver in the face of their brokenness.

Regards,

Harry.

which may happen...........

having been through various mills myself I can say that the celibate and married approach has to be different because you cannot sacrifice your family and yourself in the way required to make sense of zen

you can claim otherwise but you doomed to never make any real sense of what you are trying to get involved in because you are taking a road quite different from what can yield to you :o)

how many years will it take you to flick out?

one day you mightn't be too traumatized by thinking and noticing yourself as ablend of egoism and depression : o)

kogen  replies

Dear Andrew,

Zen priests didn't just start marrying in the 1870s because the government said they should; they just started to explain why there was a few women temple  “helpers”  and where all those young  “disciples”  were manifesting from.

A wife and kids is understanding. You're looking for  “true”  celibate monks?  Look no further than to the Nisodo, where there is any number of celibate female monastics, as today it's not very popular for female monks to marry.

Without the wife and kids and work you have a practice that is a leech on society and dependent on the economy. Where is Buddhism in India?  It died when war erupted and the monks weren't supported by the laity and they couldn't support themselves

Facing others is facing the self. Your approach reeks of religious zeal and belief. You should wash your face

my  reply to kogen

kogen, yeah a wife and kids is understanding and more than that, a very substantial maturity not available to celibates or the childless :o(

being childless I see this immaturity in myself all the time and a good example is the time I am sinking into replying to you, to those with families it looks insane and a waste of time arguing with reprobates :o)

however if you were familiar with the history of zen , it is a tradition of  “realized celibates”  because it takes the energy that goes goes into maintaining a relationship and the children's welfare and puts that into understanding what it is all about !

looking at your  blog  one can see a blend of understanding  (hey I cook with a pressure cooker too!),  but also the usual zen glass wall where you use ceremonies, the usual buddhist legends and fictitious nonsense to isolate yourself from making the realchanges necessary to progress further down this road of infinity :o)

however congratulations on replying and not slinking back to the usual hole that zen mice are so good at, out of  “harms”  way and any real dealing with what zen is about : o)

harry  replies  starting with a quote from my previous post to him !

“ do you see how you react, unable to accept that you too are broken and have a malfunctional (in terms of what zen is about ! : o ) blend of egoism and depression ? : o ) ”

Hi Andrew,

Oh, I fully accept and admit that I am damaged goods, that I have depressive tendencies (not a great failing, or a thing to 'accuse' someone off in my book really), and that I am egoistic... however, it doesn't seem to me that you have much of validity to say about 'what Zen is about', so I would query that assertion.

If you could readjust your focus away from the failings of others and on to your own considerable failings (and accomplishments, of course) I might be more inclined to open my ear to a word or two from you about Zen. As it is, you come across like just another crazy internet hater person, not some inspired Zen genius... and your violent use of language is letting you down as a poet and as a person, but surely you realise that. I wonder do you realise why you do it?

Regards,

Harry.

my  reply

harry, the point of being  “damaged goods”  is that normative reality is more damaged since it functions by the exclusion of infinity !

it's the insane and developmentally disordered that see infinity/god/buddha best since the blinders are broken !

you are starting to see for yourself, that's all it is and the weight and feeling of infinity infuses and speaks and is the identity of seeing.........

don't proxy with half formed malcontents like nishijima, warner and dogen :o)

kogen  replies

Dear Andrew,

When I decided to become a  zen  person the other choice was Dungeons and Dragons! I'm not kidding. I still have the Dungeons and Dragons books, they're just under the zen books. Zen master means Dungeon master to me. I take them equally as serious. The only reason I switched to zen is because I had already put in 15 years into D&D. It was time for a change. Despite my disbelief, there are actually more books about Zen and Buddhism than there is about D&D. However, I don't think one is more real than the other. One is just more fun. And I still get to wear a medieval costume.

Deep bow,

Kogen

in one of your early  posts  you write about turning a young woman away from Robert livingston's temple in new orleans and it was an ambiguous experience for you, something went awry or at least you weren't sure !

what I think the issue was , was that she had good abilities in the semantic area and it remedied a disability you struggle with, that is getting a sensible overall view of things, like me you have a certain sort of gullibility to the nonsense promoted in zen !

her words were  “I get kicked out of everywhere.”  and that is your paradigm and mine and is Buddha in life ! :o)

dungeons and dragons amplify this  “ semantic-pragmatic ”  weakness we have but alternatively reading widely with the quality thinking and literature available    remedies the error,  it doesn't have to be dungeons and dragons !!!

inquiry is basically solitary and not communal and i understand what you are saying about dungeons and dragons, i have the same problemwith TV, but by reading quality and not the second rate nonsense pushed in zen you can talk directly with people in the past who actually know what it is about and not be suckered by the blind mediocrities like reb anderson who are so puffed up with their self importance that they can't see they piss sugar loaded urine :o()

be careful of green gulch, being still young you don't know the value of good joints and your physical strength, that ability to labour hard physically goes soon enough and when you lose your value to these places they just spit you out !

basically there's alevel above what you have regarded as valid, one rarely sees these people on it in one own's own lifetime so you are confined to read them, but they are your peers not the maudlin twitism of conventional zen and green gluch : o) (

my  reply  to harry  (decided not to post as abit much !)  who was trying to claim some utility and sense to dogens  “records”

but you never read dogen, you read some opinionated person's version of some text that may or may not bear some resemblance to what dogen actually wrote or said !

dogen has many more textual issues than appears, we see a combination of copies and text in his own hand, copies get changed by copiers as is shown by comparisons between them and the original hand and the translations give no indication of the state of the text they are working off !

in addition to textual and translation problems we have a man with severe cognitive issues slowly grafting a better understanding over many years............!!!!

his  “teacher”  Tiāntóng Rújìng had a much better understanding, unfortunately, most of what we know about what he said was very altered by those who recorded him, this was a complaint that dogen made !!!

dogen is really into the living dead paradigm but of course the mousey zensters write that out !!!!!

the big attraction of dogen is between his half understanding and naturally off target recursion and the translators and the copiers bowdlerization and misdirection is we have a beautiful example of voynich that can mean anything you want and still look ineffable, but basically is apile of crap and I challenge you  (don't be avoidant harry)  to come up with something meaningful from him with a reasonable degree of exegesis of the source documents and translation !!!

harry, you are supposed to be interested in truth, but all that seems to matter to you is what you are impressed with !

F A I L !

you really need to try a little translation yourself, once you do that in a meaningful way you will understand that what you read in trnalsation is always some distance from what the original author wrote and see that the quoting of dogen thrown around like confetti on the web is just so much waste paper  (photons : o)  !

you don't have to know the archaic japanese and chinese involved at this level and in fact most translators don't.

but that's work and it's easier to be ignorant ?

btw i done have several very small translations  (re-translations as they are not from the source text?)  of dogen or replies to passages that actually make sense !

if you look at mike cross's  blog , he goes back to the sanskrit of the saundarananda and reasons his translations through with comparisons from other translators, it makes it clear how large the amount of intpretation and opinion there is and how much is lost through time and cultural and word association changes !

my collection of comments and translations on dogen  (list to be extended as time permits!)

Wei Ying-wu

This morning my quarters were so cold

I suddenly thought of my friend in the mountains

gathering firewood down by the creek

lugging it back to boil white rocks

I wish I could bring him a gourd full of wine

to drive off the wind and rain at night

but fallen leaves cover the deserted slopes

and how could I find the trail

poems

extracts  courtesy of amazon  of bill porter's  (red pine)  book  “ in such hard times ”

it's interesting that we have sucha comprehensive biography of wei ying-wu from the discovery of his, his wife's, son's and his son's wife's tombstone epitaths in 2007 by grave robbers digging in the wei family cemetery !  (location unkown !)

at the end of the book is a touching reproduction of the epitath written by wei ying-wu for his wife and the only example of his handwriting which is absolutely gorgeous !

so magnificent, it must have been a factor in his employment as a civil servant !

woody allen is more intelligent than he knows, but the  movie  is done from the wrong perspective, it's like things are controllable or steerable, potentially anyway, but in fact a combination of the modern dysfunctional diet, loss of hormones  (HRT denied to her by the ignorance of doctors)  and today's infamous abundance of chemical stressors have destroyed jasmine's brain and all that happens simply reflects that, a functioning brain normalizes and copes and adapts non-traumatically !

if you eat shot game be careful of lead from the bullets, they can break up into small particles and travel everywhere in the carcass, that's why solid copper bullets are the only way to go imo, but will the hunters listen ?

no ......................................

i always use disposable latex gloves when gutting and since the meat is very tough with most game  (very young animals are much more tender),  i mostly eat the offal which is more nutritious anyway

thyroids and testicles give a real boost and the brain  (if you are in a country without stock or feral brain diseases like new zealand and australia)  really helps your own brain work better !

toxoplasmosis tissue cysts are killed at  67C  and  -10C  for 3 days,  you need to pay attention to the minimum internal temperatures that need to be reached which i generally take to be say medium - medium rare !

it's hard to put my finger on exactly but i am fairly certain that canola oil causes shortened sleeping times and an overall innervation that is not quite pleasant ! :o(

a very very small amount in the diet maybe beneficial, but once it gets above a certain point  (tiny in my case !)  then one sleeps a shorter period, like an hour less a day !

the other big area i think that is aproblem is ethoxyquinin, which used as a preservative in some dried herbs, it's a brilliant preservative in maintaining colour  (dried chillis, paprika, tumeric?),  but again reduces sleeping times :o)

so i just stick to fresh herbs, chillis with the occasional coriander/cilantro mainly  !

the fat soluble preservatives appear generally to cause sleep difficulties, i am thinking of TBHQ, BHA and BHT which are used to preserve cooking oils !

there must be an issue with the fatty acid compostion of oils genernally having an ennervating effect on the brain, like i can tolerate fish oil almost right on bed and olive oil maybe an hour or so before, but sunflower oil really has to be only taken in the morning : o ()

yeah, just been reading up on  it,  i think they are talking quite large quantities and the study ran from 2002 to 2013 and i think that fish oil has improved a lot in quality in the last couple of years

but there is an issue,  however the brain does need those DHA and EPA building blocks that fish oil provides

so i guess it's a balance thing depending on one's personal situation

women have the advantage in this case because fish oil  reduces  the chance of breast cancer !

a relative  comments

Big news here a few weeks ago that fish oil contributes to prostrate cancer

my  reply

well, one of the issues is how oxidised the fish oil when you take it and things have improved greatly in the last year or two and that study ran from 2002 to 2013, so there's quite abit of lag !

you do have to be sure of using quality!

however there is an issue and no doubt we will see a clearer picture over the coming years, there's alot of confounding factors

the trouble is fish oil provides basic building blocks in the brain and it simply does not develop or work properly without them and the effect transfers through the generations !

i personally take quite a large quantity of fish oil a day, a dessert spoon and don't think i have any problems, in fact my prostate has never been better, but i supplement also from an anti cancer viewpoint  e.g. germanium sesquioxide, iodine and use 35% hydrogen peroxide topically and have a homemade uvb lamp to get adequate skin vitamin d over winter  (i also irridate shitake and oyster mushrooms with that lamp to get vitamin D2 in them !)

shitake mushrooms have an anti cancer action and i think oyster and button mushrooms also :o)

so between dietary factors and some intelligent supplementation you can dramatically reduce your cancer and metabolic disease risk, i was hopeful that fish oil was a stand alone no complications supplement i could recommend but it looks like this is not the case : o(

i think men can gauge the state of their prostate reasonably well by urination difficulty  (i love getting older, all this stuff that was not even a thought when one was younger : o)

my observation is an increasing gap in health between those locked into the conventional medical approaches and those taking a wider more intelligent view of diet and suppplementation, a very simple example is people with diabetes who won't supplement chromium......................

there's very good recent research tying in iron supplementation to  salmonella  and mobile phones to severe  oxidative  stress in the salivary glands and hence by implication the head and by further implication, an increased cancer risk;  but people only seem to ignore this sort of thing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at a society level you can see there is a sort of collapse in health occuring and an increasing rate of developmental disorders in children but flexibility or any interest in thinking straight and avoiding problems before they occur is not a human strong point ! : o(

shakespeare was an underworld figure ?

wow,  william shakespeare was an underworld  standover/hardman  and prostitution rackeeter !

unbelievable !!!!!

given the involvement of theaters at that time with prostitution it's possible to see how he could have become involved with sir henry neville and may even explain the source of sir henry neville's syphillis

so shakespeare was actually a fairly notorious underworld figure ! : o )

no-one would ever have assumed him as the authors of those plays, some of which were politically dangerous, yet he was never pulled up for that, it being assumed he was fronting for some-one else and probably given sir robert cecil's  (secretary of state)  harping on about sir henry using alot of paper when he was ambassador in france, the true authorship may have have some currency in certain circles !

there has been a fascinating world of elizabethan culture closed off to us by the necessity sir henry and his agents saw to disguise the true authorship of his works !

well he knew the value of his writing : o )

this would all weave into a brilliant film script : o)

Shakespeare versus Sir Henry Neville

it's rather amusing to compare the  timelines  of what is known historically about them of william shakespeare and sir henry neville :o)

the academics are just waiting until brenda james dies and they can then give lip service to her discovery and claim the glory for this infinitely more interesting author :o)

while shakespeare the money lender was chasing debtors in courts for six pounds, sir henry neville  (a heir to the fabulous gresham fortune)  had to pay five thousand pounds  ( a fabulous sum in those days, and would have been equivalent to three and a half million pounds now !)  to escape the death sentence for his role in the essex rebellion !

3 years in the tower of london with his friend and patron the ex earl of southampton who also ratted/made a scapegoat of neville to the authorities ! : o)
